Changing seasons and stressful times: The best multi-step routine for maskne

October 23, 2020

You’re probably feeling the changes in the air as the autumn season approaches which also equals to changes in your skin. To make the situation worse, people are asked to wear face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but it’s causing dryness and acne.

On top of seasonal changes, you may be dealing with the stresses related to the pandemic; such as lockdown, infected family members, and social distancing which can make people feel isolated and alone. Fear and anxiety can reflect on the skin as maskne.

Maskne is a skin condition that is brought on by the use of facial protection. Maskne happens because of the moisture buildup. While particles and dust collect on the outside of the mask; water vapor, oil, nasal mucus, saliva, and sweat collects on the inside of the mask.

Ways to deal with this challenge is to wash your masks after each use or at least daily. Rotate masks made of different materials and designs so pressure marks can be relieved. Use a gentle, nonirritating soap and place it in the dryer which will eliminate any viral particles remaining.

Coping with stress in a healthy way can make you feel much better. Make time to unwind. Know how to get counseling or therapy either in person or telehealth. Take breaks from watching, reading or listening to news stories, which can be upsetting.

Moisturized skin is more resilient and better equipped to cope with the extremes of temperature and stresses that make it prone to irritation and chaffing. It’s important to utilize light moisturizing products such as, NB Mask Logic, which heals and serves as a protective barrier.

Use light-weight materials, like 100% cotton, that allows the moisture to dissipate and the skin to breathe. Avoid make-up under the mask, but do more to highlight the eyes. Leave pimples alone, as this can spread the infection and make the situation worse.
